The Best Sewing Tools
A quick list of sewing tools you need to know about. These simple tools will make your sewing projects easier and more enjoyable!

As a hobby seamstress for almost 20 years, I’ve often made do with what I have on hand (which is part of the beauty of sewing). However, there are several tools (some of them, old friends, and some new) that I wanted to share with you as they have become permanent fixtures in my sewing room.
A quick note before we dive in…I haven’t included the basics in this post, just my favorites. But of course you will likely want a sewing machine, pins, bobbins and several other basics, but that’s another post for another day.
The Best Sewing Tools
Sewing Gauge – Mine was gifted by a dear friend and my life has not been the same since. Ok, that may be dramatic, but seriously I use it almost every time I sew. It’s great for checking quick measurements, and I also love to use it when pressing seams. Pictured below.

Small Precision Scissors– These are great for trimming up thread on a sewing or embroidery project. The pair I use, I’ve had for ages so I can’t link them, but I found this absolutely darling pair for under $10.
Tailor’s Chalk – I’ve never been a big fan of marking pens, so I often used plain chalk (which is rather bulky and dull). I was thrilled when I came across this sleek set which is the perfect solution to all my marking problems (it comes with a case, too). Pictured below.

Iron and Ironing Board – This one may seem a bit silly to add, but pressing seams when a project calls for it is a must! Not only does it make the project a bit easier to manage, it can truly make a difference in how polished your final piece looks. In the most loving way I can say this – don’t skip the ironing!
Rotary Cutter Set -This is a three piece set with a rotary cutter, sewing ruler and self-healing cutting mat. I use these so often! They’re great for cutting straight lines simply and quickly (perfect for this Cloth Napkin Pattern). They’re also good if you’re cutting multiple layers of fabric at a time. I can’t link my particular set as it’s been piece-mealed over the years (pictured below) , but if you’re interested, this set is from a reputable brand.

Fabric Scissors – I have definitely cut my fair share of fabric with less than ideal scissors, but a good pair of scissors really does matter. In fact, I’m currently in need of a new pair and am looking into this beautiful pair.
Canvas Drop Cloths – Ok, not a tool per se, but I use these so often in my sewing. Not only does it serve well as a drop cloth for painting and refinishing furniture, but a fresh clean one makes a great liner for the Birthday Banner Pattern. I even have some throw pillows and cafe curtains made of it. You won’t regret keeping drop cloths on hand.
Double Fold Bias Tape – Again, not a tool, but I always keep this on hand. I use it to hang my fabric banners (pictured below is the Heirloom Noel Banner Pattern) and I’ve even used it to finish off pockets for aprons (which..I may have a cute half apron pattern in the future).

I know there are so many wonderfully helpful tools out there, but these are my current favorites that I use regularly. I will definitely update this post with more favorites as my list expands! Let me know in the comments what your must-have sewing tools are!
As always with love, Ashlei
I’m totally with you. I worked as a seamstress for many years and agree on all points. My favorite is the gauge, number one on your list. It is an amazing timesaver when doing lots of seaming. And the tiny scissors are a must too in my book. Love this great resource for helpful items for sewing!
Thank you so much, Heidi! I don’t know what I’d do without my sewing gauge! haha!
